Why It Is Essential for Businesses to Be Taggable on Social Media

As the Communications Specialist here at the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce, part of my job is to utilize our social media accounts to help promote our members, as well as their events, products, and services.  One problem that I frequently run into is the inability (or finding it difficult) to “tag” a business on a particular social medium.  This may not seem like a huge issue at first glance, but this can put someone’s marketing efforts at a serious disadvantage.  Not only do you make it harder for your personal network to see your promotional efforts, but you may also be greatly decreasing the potential number of reachable users.  A 2015 study by Brandwatch found that anywhere between 43%-96% of conversations about various brands occur on channels other than official brand accounts.[1]  Therefore, it would be wise for businesses to become as accessible as possible to these conversations.  In this post, I will be giving 3 quick and easy tips on how and why it is essential for businesses to have a taggable social media presence, even on platforms that they may not be using.  For the purposes of this article, we will be focusing on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

3 quick tips to ensuring social media taggability

Tip #1:  Make sure that all of your social media account names accurately reflect your business name.

I’ve encountered many business pages that fail to remain consistent across various social media platforms with regards to their name.  This inconsistency can make it difficult for people to find and tag your business, which can prevent people in other networks, circles, and connections, from ever seeing the post/event/update/etc.

Tip #2:  Create accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter…even if you don’t use them.

It may sound obvious, but every business should, at the very least, set up an account on all 3 social media avenues with basic information about their business (address, phone number, general information, etc.).  Not only does this help with credibility and SEO, it also helps tremendously with marketing and networking.  When tagging, you expose a post to 2 or more networks, rather than 1.  Those networks are then exposed to other networks as well, depending on the number of engaged users.  For this reason, you should be making it as easy as possible for people to find your business on all 3 social media channels.

Tip #3:  Make sure you’ve given all 3 of your accounts a unique and easily-findable @username.

This gives people a quick and easy way to find your specific page when tagging.  I would recommend something consistent with your business, and unique enough that it won’t get confused with another page (don’t choose something vague like @marketing, as you will be lost in the midst of hundreds of other marketing pages and may not even populate when someone is trying to tag you).
